Wilson's Promontory, Victoria
After nearly two years in the mountains of British Columbia, returning to Melbourne left the adventurous side of me feeling unfulfilled. In Canada, despite Covid lockdowns, I was out hiking, camping, skiing, kayaking, foraging, or biking almost every day. Part of that was because nature was so accessible, but also because the landscape was so beautiful that staying home felt like a waste.
To scratch that adventure itch, I decided to take myself on a solo five-day hike around Wilson’s Promontory. And to make it a bit more challenging, I went with a tarp and hammock setup—something I hadn’t done before.
To cut a long story short, I was pretty ill-prepared. I hadn’t done my research on the tarp and hammock setup, and it showed. Didn’t I look like a dumb-dumb sitting there under my not-so-rainproof tarp? It rained for the first few days, and once my sleeping bag got wet, it was game over. I had to change my route and cut the trip down to four days.
I had a laugh or two at myself along the way. Sometimes my “She’ll be right” attitude is a bit too optimistic (or just naive). But hey, all character-building.
